Review: Rogue Legacy

I first stumbled upon Rogue Legacy watching my friend–and fellow Sandbox Gamer Stephen Chislett–play it on Steam. I remember being very confused at the concept of the game and finding Stephen’s explanation of the randomized character traits pointless. However, after downloading it for the PS4 as a PS Plus Free Game in February, I’ve surpassed level 100 and over 20 hours of game play.

I quickly fell in love with the game. Turns out, it wasn’t an overly complicated game like I had once believed, but rather a fast paced minimal game that did wonders to simply entertain. It wasn’t plot laden, or applauded for graphics, but rather its simply fun nature.

The objective of the game is, in short, to beat the 4 bosses in a Castle Harron–which actually has comprised of four “dungeons”: The Castle, The Forrest, The Miya/Tower, and The Darkness–to unlock the door to the final boss Johannes, the Traitor, who kills the King at the opening sequence of the game. But the plot or the controls isn’t what makes the game special. Each time you die, you respawn as a child or descendant of the previous character. You select a child from one of three randomized children of various classes: Knight, Spelltheif, Mage, Assassin, Barbarian, and a few others that can be unlocked as you progress in the game. Upon each respawn, unless you choose to “lock” the castle via the Architect, the castle becomes randomized and its map is not the same. There’s no way to predict if there’s any special rooms or what enemies lie in what door. The element of surprise is what makes the game fun for me.

The other big thing that the game makes use of is unlockable items. When you kill enemies you can pick up gold coins. Using these you can unlock parts of the Mansion–a place to upgrade your characters traits, like health or damage, or upgrade a class like Knight to Paladin. You can also use them to purchase armour upgrades through The Blacksmith when you find the blueprints within the castle–finding them enables their ability to be purchased) The same goes for runes, which can be purchased through the Enchantress, which are traits that you can equip after finding them. These runes can be equipped to each piece of equipment your character has – helmet, cape, sword, gauntlets, etc –and give you different abilities such as a speed dash, double jump, or allows you to gather health or mana when you slay enemies. You can stack these runes to actually get a more effective trait, for example, if you stack multiple jump runes you can actually triple, or quadruple jump.

Although the enemies throughout the game are all redressed and rehashed versions of each other, as a whole, the game is a wild ride to play. Whether you’re a casual or competitive gamer, everyone can pick up this game and play it. I would recommend it to anyone whose looking for a fun game to play.
